Something else, huh?
Okay, here's the deal: My office is tiny. Though it is slightly bigger than the one at the old apartment, I've decided to keep *all* my books, paper, and office stuff there, instead of having various office particles floating all over the place. That doesn't seem to be working. Since I have a no-particle-board rule in the new place, the old broken-down bookshelves had to go, and I've yet to find a cheap enough replacement (any Albany Freecyclers reading this?), I can't unpack all my books. The papers in my house multiply like rabbits (must be the cause of noises I'm hearing late at night), and no matter how much I throw out, more comes in. Three times more. I've already gotten rid of a lot of unwanted, un-needed stuff, and I'm thinking there will be more of that in my future. Lastly, whenever I can't find a place for something in the other rooms (which are spotless, thank you very much), I throw it in the office.
I'm coming to you for help. You understand me - I know you do. I want my office back. I'd rather not have every wall covered with shelves and bookcases, and I would love to keep the piles of paper from procreating. I'm asking for all your clutter-busting secrets, and suggestions for how to make my office a welcome place to work. I'll deal with the paint-splattered floor and dull white walls later. Most importantly, I'm dying to get the laptop out of the living room, and keep my work life separate from my home life.
Much appreciated.

That looks like mine did just a short while ago. Now although I did a massive culling and sorting, and to some it may still look like a mess, for me, it is organized and I have a working space so I'm happy.
I did it in steps by picking one corner and telling myself that for the next 15 minutes I'm gonna sort through this corner. I did a little of this every day and by the end of the week I could finally see my desktop!
Barb has good advice. Have you tried the 3 box method of sorting each corner?
I also tend to start at the far end of the room and work towards the door, taking the rubbish out as I leave the room.
Wow!
That looks like my office, lol!!
Barb and Cee's advice is good.
The only thing that helps with me is to pretend that the house is on fire, and I have to grab the most important stuff on my way out. That helps me to cull harder and faster (when I get desperate enough to do it, lol!!)... and throw out that stuff that I'm 'on the fence' about.
Good luck!!
Start decluttering one section at a time in 15 minute increments.
Use Freecycle/Craigs list religiously.
A good shredder for the paper.
Also take a plastic bag and pick up 27 items as quickly as you can. When you finish toss the items in the trash or store them in their proper place.
